 Your Health Creation Late Spring Newsletter May 2024 So, the gun is fired on the general election, traditionally a time for party pledges, bold claims and NHS-related promises. But this time feels different. Confidence in politics to address society’s deepest problems is at a low, even among the politicians, as the reality hits that public policy has not so much helped as it has hindered, with devastating impacts for the public’s health and our NHS, social care and wider public services. This is why The Health Creation Alliance´s (THCA) new Manifesto for whole system change, Health Creation: for now and future generations launched just prior to our Spring Event on 16 May contains actions for all of us, for Integrated Care Systems as well as Asks of a new Government. There is so much we can personally do without top-down guidance or permission wherever we are in ‘the system’. In the Manifesto we have shared some of our own experiences, learnings and insights to show how the green shoots of a health creating approach might connect and grow to reshape the way our health and care systems work to serve people far better. We hope it offers clarity, new ideas, renewed confidence and inspiration to make change and to influence others to do the same. For THCA, the Manifesto marks the start of a new era. It is intended to be a platform on which we can together build a vision and reality for a more equal, healthy and sustainable future for everyone. Later in the year we will announce our first wave of National Health Creation Ambassadors and through 2024/25 we will publish a series of articles, blogs and videos from members of THCA – people who are reimagining a healthier, happier, more equitable and sustainable future for everyone. Contact: neil@thehealthcreationalliance.org Merron Simpson Chief Executive Manifesto for systems change launched Health Creation: for now and future generations  On Monday May 13, we launched Health Creation: for now and future generations, a Manifesto for whole systems change. Download the Manifesto or the Executive Summary. Developed in partnership with our members and partners, the Manifesto lays out the case for a fundamental shift to health creating systems so that creating health sits alongside treatment of illness and prevention of ill health. We have broken the big shift needed into practical actions: Eight Personal Actions13 Calls to Action for ICSsSeven Asks of a new Government Thank you to all of our members and partners who contributed to the Manifesto. Without your insight, input and support, creating such a comprehensive and actionable document would not have been possible. Advancing Health CreationSpring Event Health Creation for now and future generations On Thursday May 16 we held our Spring Event. Entitled: Health Creation: for now and future generations the event set out the route to sustainable transformation of Integrated Care Systems into health creating systems for health and social care. With over 90 participants and a line-up of inspiring, experienced and knowledgeable contributors, including Prof Bola Owolabi, Chris Carlin, Lynne Ridsdale and Lord Nigel Crisp, areas explored included: • Overcoming the disconnect between services and lived experience • Should ICSs mainstream Health Inequity? • Do we have a clear line of sight to health creating communities? • The style of leadership required to create the conditions/ remove barriers • What does health creating social care look like? • Agents of change and curators of knowledge; making Health Creation business as usual Available now: Event video.THCA, member or partner examples of Health Creation best practice Sharing and learning Within our Manifesto, we highlight six examples of Health Creation best practice, delivered by THCA, our members or partners. These are also available as a separate ‘live document’. If you have an evidenced example of Health Creation you would like to be considered for inclusion in future updates, please contact: neil@thehealthcreationalliance.org  Core20PLUS Connector programme National learning event In February, THCA was involved in a national Core20PLUS Connector programme learning event, hosted by National Voices and supported by NHS SCW and the NHS England Health Inequalities Improvement Team, bringing together representatives from Integrated Care Systems, the voluntary sector and Community Connectors. Learn more about the outcomes of this important event or watch the video.Our Voices for Change work Letter in Guardian Online How the Dr Patient relationship is changing In early March, Guardian Online published a letter by Merron Simpson, Chief Executive, in response to an editorial they ran on 23 February: Seeing same GP ‘improves patient health and cuts workload of doctors’. She expanded upon their comment that human connection is good for us and keeps us well, proposing that group consultations can be a means of enhancing human connection beyond the patient-doctor relationship. Options for a National Tenant Voice Delivering a feasability study The Health Creation Alliance has been appointed by A Voice for Tenants Steering Group to undertake a feasibility study and set out options for an unmediated sustainable tenant voice to influence national housing policy. The case has grown stronger in recent years and is a gap in the influencing architecture. See this article in Inside Housing. Announcements and events HSJ Awards THCA partners with HSJ in support of Awards The Health Creation Alliance is delighted to have partnered with the HSJ in support of their 2024 awards. The HSJ Awards celebrate the projects, teams, and organisations who work tirelessly in elevating the standards of health and social care delivery. There are 25 categories to enter this year and this week HSJ have extended the entry deadline to 11.59pm on Friday 14 June. To take advantage of this extension, simply register your details by Friday 31 May. This takes a few minutes and the link to do this can be found within the individual categories. Health Creation Forum Member one hour learning and sharing events Back by popular demand, we are reinstating our occasional Health Creation Forums. These informal get togethers provide members with an opportunity to consider a subject of relevance to reducing health inequities through Health Creation while learning and sharing with others. The first Forum will be held on Tuesday 25 June | 12:30-13:30 A rights-based approach to health and wellbeing, led by David Aynsley, Founder and Trustee of Tr14ers Community Dance Charity and a THCA Associate.
