Health Creation Alliance Newsletter June 2019

Welcome to your newsletter which focuses on our two interactive events next month, a new project with the Greater Manchester Health & Social Partnership and we share insights into Health Creation Alliance policy interventions.

How can Primary Care Networks succeed in reducing health inequalities?

2 July 2019 I 09:30 – 16:30 I 220 Arlington Road, Camden, NW1 7HE

We still have 10 spaces left! If you are a member or a GP that would like to attend our FREE event, please register via Eventbrite: https://bit.ly/2LdTdSA or contact Emily Taylor on ETaylor@RuderFinn.co.uk

Hear from General Practices and contribute to a vision for Primary Care Networks to address health inequalities through community based approaches.

This interactive event hosted by new NHS Alliance in partnership with RCGP Health Inequalities Group, brings together general practitioners and leaders of PCNs with a range of community-based organisations and people with lived experience to explore what actually needs to happen for PCNs, working with local partners, to succeed in addressing and reducing, health inequalities among their populations.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our valued sponsors – Home Group https://www.homegroup.org.uk/ and Power to Change https://www.powertochange.org.uk/. Without their support this event would not have been possible.

Become proficient in Building Social Movements

17 July 2019 I 10:00 – 16:30 I St. Basils Head Office, 71-75 Allcock Street, Birmingham, B9 4DY

Come and learn how to build social movements for health with Health Creation Alliance and the Social Change Agency and apply this learning to the Health Creation Alliance, a movement for action on health inequalities.

Register via Eventbrite: https://bit.ly/2X0uEL9

Social movements for health are emerging as a vehicle for improve people’s and communities’ health. Whether they are focused on particular health conditions, in particular geographical neighbourhoods or on achieving a particular social change, social movements are all about effectively organising the strengths and energy that are already there in a community towards a goal.

Successful social movements share a set of characteristics and these need to be learned and honed by those at their core. The Health Creation Alliance is itself a movement and has been leading change with members, through Health Creation, which is itself based on movement principles. As well as learning about how to build a successful movement, this training will also give members the opportunity to shape how Health Creation Alliance works with members to go further faster in reducing health inequalities.

This is a one-off opportunity to receive training by experts, The Social Change Agency, in movement building at a hugely reduced price of £50 (includes lunch and refreshments).

Greater Manchester (GM) Health & Social Care Partnership Project

Health Creation Alliance has been commissioned by Greater Manchester (GM) Health and Social Care Partnership to generate a set of materials to support leaders of the new multi-disciplinary Integrated Neighbourhood Teams and other community-based leaders across GM to achieve a permanent shift in culture and practice towards ‘person and community-centred approaches’, also known as health creating approaches or practices.

The project involves significant co-design with key Greater Manchester practitioners and leaders and we are also undertaking this survey of Health Creation Alliance members to capture a broader range of input. Wherever you sit within the Health, Social Care, Housing, VCSE or Community Sector, we would like to hear your views.

Please spare a few minutes to complete this survey – your contribution will help to shape better materials for both formal and community leaders to draw on both within and outside Greater Manchester.

The deadline for completion is Monday 8th July 2019.

Health Creation Alliance Policy Interventions

We have had a number of useful meetings with key NHS people. Our discussions with Matt Hancock’s Special Advisor allowed us to put our views directly into the DHSC. We have been able to support the Prevention Green Paper Team with our ideas on health creation and community action. We are in discussion with the Social Care Green Paper Team on similar issues. It looks as though we need to provide the evidence for health creation more clearly. The ideas are now current, but they have yet to appear in operationalised policy.

We are also in touch with the Primary Care Networks Team, talking with them about how PCNs can and should be seeing health creation at the core of their business.

We are very supportive of the Personalisation Plan, it is a significant step forward. However, we think that there is an important gap – there is little on community- strengthening approaches without which, the plan is unsustainable. So, through our involvement in the Coalition for Collaborative Care, we have developed policy recommendations that we shall be discussing with the Team over the next few weeks.

A big thank you to all our contributors and sponsors

From everyone at NNHSA we wanted to thank them for their outstanding support.
