Health Creation Alliance Newsletter – June/July

NNHSA Newsletter July 2017

NNHSA Summer Event & AGM

This flagship event was held in London on 5th July. It was attended by healthcare professionals and resident/expert witnesses, with a dynamic and interactive programme of presentations, workshops and panel discussions, chaired by Prof Paul Burstow, Birmingham Mental Health Commission.
The day was defined by the moving stories of motivational empowerment in action and how good being connected and in control made people feel; and the positive and enthusiastic sharing of ideas and innovations in health creation practice. We were encouraged by our delegate’s discussions, information sharing and energy for change, despite often citing how hard it is to change our mindset and to progress the journey of health creation in a reluctant system.
Welcoming delegates and speakers, NNHSA Chair, Heather Henry, commented that courageous new thinking is required to ensure that Health Creation and health creating practices become ‘business as usual!’ Chief Executive, Merron Simpson, gave a reminder that there is a growing urgency for the NHS and other sectors to move quickly to adopt Health Creation as a routine part of what it does.
Which is why the Alliance have identified the 5 features of health creating practices in our manifesto – because it offers those working at any level within any organisation a starting point for creating conditions for people to increase their levels of the 3Cs (Health Creation).

NNHSA Health Creating Workshop: “Measuring what matters: embedding health creating outoutcomes at scale”

Held in London on 12th July, the workshop was attended by a broad range of stakeholders and explored what needs to happen so that health and care systems focus their attention and value what matters to people.
Our workshop was supported by AbbVie, who are taking a lead in supporting the NHS to measure what matters. Through its work to kick-start decisions about value; its support of ‘Talking AS’ – a PROM for ankylosing spondylitis
and the Fit for Work Coalition’s focus on work as a health outcome, Abbvie has already done a lot to change the conversations at both strategic level and between clinicians and patients.
Speakers included:

  • Dr Emma Miller, University of Strathclyde
  • Alan Long, The Mears Group: The Wiltshire Provider Experience
  • NicholaStefanou, Head of Clinical Practice, The Home Group
  • Ian Bottomley, Head of Mental Health and JointCommissioning,  Oxfordshire CCG
  • AndrewBigginton, Kent Fire and Rescue Service
  • Julian Cox, Head of Research, Greater Manchester Combined Authority
  • Georgina Craig, NNHS National Executive Member and Outcomes Lead
