Launch of ‘A Manifesto for Health Creation’
The Health Creation Alliance ground-breaking and visionary Health Creation Manifesto was officially launched on Tuesday 16th May. The Manifesto articulates what Health Creation is, contains many stories of health creation and explains how practices can change to become health creating. It details 10 High Impact Recommendations for a health creating health system – and calls for:
- The adoption of health creating practices
- System reforms to support health creation
- Enhanced education on health creation
We have received very positive feedback from a wide range of stakeholders – organisations and individuals – who enthusiastically promoted it around their networks and Twitter followers. Of particular note is that the 3 Cs of Health Creation – control, contact and confidence, and our vision of what will be different when health-creating practice is happening at scale – and what needs to happen to get from here to there, appeared to resonate strongly. Please help to publicise it to your wider networks using the twitter hashtag #HealthCreation

All Party Parliamentary Group – Primary Care and Public Health – Inquiry into Managing Demand in Primary Care
The Health Creation Alliance have submitted written evidence to the APPG Primary Care and Public Health Inquiry. We welcome the opportunity to give oral evidence to expand further on the points highlighted in our document; but the Inquiry has been put on hold due to the General Election. Our submission focuses on ways in which communities can work with primary care to reduce demand and was a summary of collated evidence drawn from a wide range of our members’ experience on reducing demand in primary care. Thank you for sending us your evidence. You can find our submission here: https://www.thehealthcreationalliance.org/?generaldocs=new-nhs-alliance-submission-appg-primary-care-public-health-inquiry-managing-demand-general-practice
Active Alliance West Midlands meeting in Birmingham
Fifteen Health Creation Alliance West Midlands based members met for the first time and heard Peter Hay, Director of Social Care at Birmingham City Council and member of Health Creation Alliance National Executive, talk about his Health Creation in Birmingham project. Describing the project as ‘an antidote for an outgoing Director’ his presentation outlined his early findings on the dynamics of the ‘community tapestry’ in Birmingham, how it functions, how it’s funded and how it creates health. Health Creation Alliance looks forward to learning more about Health Creation in Birmingham and intends to publish this insightful project later in the year.
Co creating health through work workshop
In February 2017, The Health Creation Alliance ran a workshop with key opinion formers from health, housing and the employability sectors to explore “What needs to happen so that we support employers, the NHS and people who live with long term health issues to create health through work?” Supported by APM and Groundwork, the group shared their diverse perspectives and reflected on current practice in creating health and improving work-related outcomes, and imagined solutions to move this agenda forward at pace and with a strong emphasis on the contribution of communities and community based support. You can find the report on the workshop here: https://www.thehealthcreationalliance.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/NHS-Alliance-work-health-creation-summary-report-v4-030517.pdf
Health Creation Alliance Workshop 12 July – in association with Abbvie
“Measuring what matters: embedding health creating outcomes at scale”
The purpose of this seminar is to explore with a broad range of expert stakeholders in the current system who have succeeded in transforming the way personal outcomes are understood, supported and measured, what needs to happen so that health and care systems focus their attention and value what matters to people.
The workshop will:
- Define what we mean by outcomes and provide a simple framework for differentiating between inputs, processes, outputs and outcomes that everyone can use
- Review what we know works in practice using a case study approach
- Capture the key lessons and common critical success factors
- Coproduce suggested next steps to build on this learning for key stakeholders, including: national bodies and policy makers; commissioners and providers and early adopters who can help accelerate system progress
This is a seminar-style event and places are limited. If you would like to attend and believe you have particular knowledge or perspectives to contribute to this, please contact Georgina Craig by emailing: georgina@elcworks.co.uk
Chair of Health Creation Alliance speaker at RCN Congress
Heather Henry, Health Creation Alliance Chair, raised wellness as a matter of discussion and debate with 5,000 nurses at the recent Royal College of Nursing annual congress. She encouraged delegates to consider a wellness model to support patients, and cited the Salford Dadz project as an example of wellness. In her platform address, she said there was a still a general tendency to focus on what is the matter with people rather than what matters to them.
