Health Creation Alliance Newsletter October 2019

Annual Member Meeting 2019 – Last Chance to Book!

16 October 2019 | 10.30 – 15:30 | Birmingham

This year’s meeting will focus on building our movement, unlocking the power of our members to go further to deliver a permanent and sustainable shift to policies, systems and services. We would love you to be there to inform and guide our Movement Building Strategy so that it works for our members. There are a handful of places remaining. Please email Emily Taylor at Taylor@RuderFinn.co.uk if you would like to attend and a full agenda will follow.

We will also be joined by our patron Lord Victor Adebowale who will talk about his experiences of working with government to secure high level action to address health inequalities. And we will discuss more of our recent and current work to ‘penetrate the mainstream with health creating practices’ including our efforts to establish a Give Us a Voice’ platform, to shift power in Greater Manchester, to support Primary Care Networks to deliver on health inequalities and to hold our next Health Creation: Wealth Creation Summit in the West Midlands.

Primary Care Networks and Health Inequalities

We hosted an event in London in July, jointly with Royal College of GPs Health Inequalities Group, on
the theme ‘How can Primary Care Networks succeed in reducing health inequalities’. As usual, we had a very diverse group of people in the room. We heard many community perspectives as well as those
from GPs working in disadvantaged neighbourhoods, community pharmacy, housing and NHS England and Improvement. There were some healthy debates!
We have produced an event report which includes a quick-start guide to reducing health inequalities for Primary Care Networks: https://www.thehealthcreationalliance.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/PCNsconference-report_3.0.pdf

And a short video with highlights from the event:

Health Creation Alliance and RCGP have since been commissioned by NHS England to host a further three events on this theme in Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol. You are invited to a webinar to discuss and shape these events at 4pm on 23rd October. We will send out details of how to join the webinar shortly.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our valued sponsors – Home
Group https://www.homegroup.org.uk and Power to Change
https://www.powertochange.org.uk. Without their support this event would not
have been possible.

Prevention Green Paper

Health Creation Alliance has been invited by Jo Churchill MP, Parliamentary Undersecretary of State for Prevention, Public Health and Primary Care to provide insights to DHSC on the Prevention Green Paper.
We have been working to bring an informed submission based on our learning from members over the last few years. We have focused on 9 of the 21 questions in the paper and we are looking for further insight into the following questions:

• Q: There are many factors affecting people’s mental health. How can we support the things
that are good for mental health and prevent the things that are bad for mental health, in
addition to the mental health actions in the green paper?

• Q: What could the government do to help people live more healthily: in homes and
neighbourhoods, when going somewhere, in workplaces, in communities?

• Q: What more can we do to help local authorities and NHS bodies work well together?

• Q: What other areas (in addition to those set out in this green paper) would you like future government policy on prevention to cover?

Please send your insights, lived experience, case studies relating to the above or on any other
elements of the paper to Merron Simpson, CEO Health Creation Alliance at merron@newrealities.co.uk.
While the deadline for submissions is 14 October, any contributions we receive after that will inform our ongoing dialogue with DHSC on ‘Prevention’.

2020s/advancing-our-health-prevention-in-the-2020s-consultation-document
